Preface

The IBM Communication Oriented Messages System (CORMES) is designed to ease the information exchange within an organization. It provides a means for a paperless communication between end users and online application programs.

Objectives of the General Information Manual

This manual is an introduction to CORMES. It is written mainly for company executives, system administrators, and system programmers to provide an overview of the CORMES capabilities.

Manual Structure

The CORMES General Information Manual is organized as follows:

Chapter 1. "Introduction to CORMES" introduces the scope and the advantages of CORMES.
Chapter 2. "Structure of CORMES Messages" describes the structure of CORMES messages. There are two types of messages: action messages, which are sent by or to users, and trigger messages, which are sent by application programs to other application programs.
Chapter 3. "CORMES Services" discusses the CORMES services: user services, application programmer services, system services, and utilities.
Chapter 4. "CORMES System Overview" provides a short description of the CORMES modules which are the message handler, the action file handler, the trigger file handler, the action file monitor, and the user services.
Chapter 5. "Using CORMES" provides, by means of a manufacturing example and an insurance example, a description of the use of CORMES as a message information exchange tool.
Chapter 6. "Product Environment for CORMES" describes the operating environment and the machine and programming requirements.
Chapter 7. "Installing CORMES" lists the programs necessary to install and use CORMES. It also discusses the topics the user is responsible for and provides performance, reliability, and security considerations.

Related Publications

To be familiar with the terminologies of the IBM Customer Information Control System/Virtual Storage (CICS/VS), the IBM Data Language/I DOS/VS (DL/I DOS/VS) or the Information Management System/Virtual Storage (IMS/VS), you should refer to the following publications:

Note: The expression "OS/VS" is used in this manual as a collective term for the operating systems OS/VS1 and OS/VS2 MVS. Likewise, references to DOS/VS apply also to the operating system DOS/VSE.
